CR Review: Forever and a Day by Jill Shalvis

Forever and a Day (Lucky Harbor, #6)

Forever and a Day
by Jill Shalvis
Book #6 in the Lucky Harbor series
Contemporary Romance
★★★

Grace never thought she'd be starting her life over from scratch. Losing everything has landed her in Lucky Harbor, working as a dog walker for overwhelmed ER doctor Josh Scott. But the day his nanny fails to show up, Grace goes from caring for Josh's lovable mutt to caring for his rambunctious son. Soon Grace is playing house with the sexy single dad . . .

With so many people depending on him, Josh has no time for anything outside of his clinic and family-until Grace arrives in town. Now this brainy blonde is turning his life inside out and giving a whole new meaning to the phrase "good bedside manner." Josh and Grace don't know if what they have can last. But in a town like Lucky Harbor, a lifetime of love starts with just one day . . .

REVIEW:

Grace Brooks is the last of the "Chocoholics" to figure out a direction for herself. She left her investment banking job back east for another in Seattle but it fell through and she landed in Lucky Harbor. Her money is running out and she still hasn't found a sustainable job. Meanwhile, she's become very close to her two friends, Mallory Quinn and Amy Michaels, and doesn't like the prospect of having to leave this town. She gets an offer from Josh Scott, the local stressed out doctor, to walk his new puppy and Grace jumps at the opportunity. Little did she know that she was walking into a life changing situation.

Josh is one over extended guy, what with his private practice, ER duty at the local hospital and helping out at the clinic. On top of all this, he's a single father of a five-year old son and takes care of his 21-year old sister who is a paraplegic confined to a wheelchair. I got exhausted just listening to a typical day for this man.

What makes this story work is how likable and appealing Josh and Grace are individually and as a couple. Even though they both try to minimize whatever it is they have going on between them, they are also pretty honest with themselves and each other. While they keep stepping into denial, that doesn't stop them from giving into their feelings and engaging in some pretty sizzling interludes. Of course, the dog and the child account for some pretty hilarious moments and haphazardly bring Josh and Grace even closer. There's nothing more tiresome in a romance than a lot of "should we or shouldn't we" angst that keeps a couple apart again and again and thankfully this story didn't go down that road. These two have these private reflections but time and again go with their feelings and decide to deal with repercussions later.

This is a story about two people who followed paths designed by others for them, are pretty miserable but successful and find themselves wanting something more. With Josh, he assumed his father's practice after he died in an accident. With Grace, she sought to please her adoptive parents in an effort to measure up to their achievements. It was lovely to watch them figure it out, see themselves in each other and create something new. As with the other books in this series, the residents of the town will have you cracking up as they interfere and try to move this relationship along.

I've loved this series and hope it doesn't end here. If it does, I'm glad this couple was saved for last as theirs was a pretty satisfying ending.

UF Review: Bloodstone by Nancy Holzner

Bloodstone
by Nancy Holzner
Book #3 in Deadtown series
Mass Market Paperback, 323 pages
Published September 27th 2011 by Ace

Boston’s diverse South End is known for its architecture and great restaurants, not its body count. So when mutilated human corpses begin turning up in the area, the entire city takes notice. The killer—dubbed the South End Reaper—uses a curved blade for his grisly work. And even though there’s no real evidence pointing to a paranormal culprit, the deaths are straining the already-tense relations between Boston’s human and inhuman residents. As the bodies pile up, Vicky, her formidable aunt Mab, and her werewolf boyfriend Kane investigate, only to find that the creature behind the carnage is after something much more than blood…

Bloodstone is the third book in the Deadtown Series by Nancy Holzner. Victory (Vicky) Vaughn, the heroine, is a shape shifter living in Deadtown; part of Boston where all the paranormals are forced to live. Vicky exterminates personal demons for a fee during her “day job” and in between cases she tries to save the world from demi demons that try to take over the world.

After Vicky finishes up her latest extermination job she is faced with trying to help her MIA vampire roommate, Juliet Capulet (Yes THE Juliet Capulet as in Romeo and Juliet). Juliet went on the run from the Old Ones (a group of very old vampires) in Hellforge and now she is back and needing Vicky’s help.

While Vicky tries to help Juliet she is grabbed by a group and is being held by a mad man that she later finds out is Pryce’s (bad buy from Hellforge) father and just happens to be the real Merlin from King Arthur’s days. While Vicky is asleep she uses the dream phone line to contact her Aunt Mab that lives in Wales and is who taught Vicky everything she knows about demon hunting.

Vicky has a lot of family issues to work through in Bloodstone. We get a lot of background info on Aunt Mab and we learn why Vicky’s sister Gwen hates Mab so much. Gwen’s daughter is showing signs of becoming a shifter and will need Vicky’s guidance.

And like many UF books there is a love interest. By this installment in the series, Vicky is settled into her relationship with her boyfriend Kane, who is high profile werewolf lawyer that is fighting to for civil rights for all the paranormals in America. Kane is just one of the many people that Vicky finds herself trying to help, after he is turned into a wolf by force.

Vicky has her hands full in Bloodstone trying to save the world and keep all her loved ones safe.

If you are an Urban Fantasy fan that loves a strong heroine and the idea of a world where thousands of Bostonians get turned into zombies because of a virus sounds cool to you, then you need to check out Holzner’s Deadtown Series where the city is a melting pot of paranormal creatures just trying to live together.

EARLY CR Review: Sweet Talk by Julie Garwood

Sweet Talk

Sweet Talk
by Julie Garwood
Contemporary Romance
August 7th 2012 by Brilliance Corporation
ARC from NetGalley
★★★★

When FBI agent Grayson Kincaid first encounters Olivia MacKenzie, she makes quite an impression. The beautiful, tough, young attorney has stumbled into the middle of an FBI sting operation and has reduced it to chaos. Months of surveillance and careful planning down the drain, Kincaid's partner is furious and lets Olivia know that she's ticked off the wrong guy. After all, he's FBI.
Olivia isn’t intimidated by his partner’s bullying because she's something even scarier...she's IRS. And working for the IRS isn’t for the faint of heart. She’s on the trail of an elaborate Ponzi scheme, one that threatens to ruin the lives of naive and unsuspecting victims, and one she has personal reasons to be angry about. But after she asks questions of the wrong people, her life is suddenly endangered. She's accustomed to fighting for the underdog but being vulnerable herself is a very different story. Smart enough to know when to call for reinforcements, she contacts Grayson Kincaid.
Together they make an excellent team to fight corruption but Olivia is also fighting the immediate and intense attraction she feels for Agent Kincaid, and that may be a battle she is bound to lose.

REVIEW:

Olivia MacKenzie shows up for a job interview and finds herself right smack in the middle of an FBI sting but not before the target tries to do her some serious harm. FBI Agent Grayson Kincaid intervenes and is immediately drawn to the very attractive Olivia. He uses the case to wrangle a meeting and both realize there's an attraction. It doesn't take long for Grayson to become inserted into Olivia's life.

Olivia comes from an extremely dysfunctional family, with her father being the lead head case. She suffered from a potentially terminal disease when she was about ten years old and was sent to Washington, DC for treatment with three other young girls, all having the same affliction. These girls (nicknamed the "pips") became her lifelong friends as the only member of Olivia's family who ever came to see her during this time was her Aunt Emma.

There was quite a bit going on in the story with attempts being made on Olivia's life, her developing romance with Grayson and its inherent conflict with his job responsibity as an agent to protect her, and her father's possible illegal business practices. Add that to her unbelievably insensitive mother and sister and you had to wonder why Olivia was so normal. Her Aunt Emma and the pips seemed to be the only constancy in an otherwise peculiar upbringing.

I found the book to be interesting and really liked Olivia and Grayson but their romance had some troublesome parts. Grayson would initiate these interludes with Olivia and then disappear for extended periods, for legitimate reasons, but wouldn't communicate with her about it. Olivia never called him to task about it, thinking she wasn't really in a relationship. It caused me to take some shine off of Grayson for an extended part of the story. But, they were a really good couple when it worked.

The suspense part of the story could have had more tension. Olivia was on a mission to expose her father's fraudulent business practices and this put her in his and others crosshairs. It was pretty clear who was orchestrating the attempts on Olivia's life, even with the few red herrings to distract you. The climax should have been more compelling but was still satisfying.

I'm a big fan of Garwood's romantic suspense series. While this one isn't technically considered a part of it, there is a mention of how Grayson connects with characters from the Buchanan series. Watch for it!

I liked the story, wasn't crazy about the romance for most of it but in the end it fell into place quite nicely. I'm hoping that some of Olivia's friends (hint, hint, Collins) get their own stories in future books as they were quite interesting in their own rights. If you're a fan of the series, this book should be on your shelf.

CR Review: At Last by Jill Shalvis Book

At Last (Lucky Harbor, #5)

At Last
by Jill Shalvis
Book #5 in the Lucky Harbor series
Contemporary Romance
ARC from NetGalley
★★★★

HER LOVE HAS COME ALONG . . . Amy Michaels loves her new life in Lucky Harbor. A waitress in the local diner, she's looking forward to her first weekend hike through the mountains. But when a wrong turn takes her off the trail, she finds herself up close and personal with forest ranger Matt Bowers. And even though she's tempted to kiss that sexy smile right off his face, she won't make the mistake of getting involved with the town heartthrob.
A former cop whose life went south, Matt doesn't let anyone get too close. But something about the feisty beauty caught his eye the moment he first saw her in the diner. After a hot night under a starry sky, Matt can't deny their attraction-or the fact that for the first time in a long time, he feels the stirrings of something more. Now it's up to Matt to help Amy see that, no matter what is in their past, together they can build a future in Lucky Harbor.

REVIEW:

Amy Michaels, a waitress at the Eat Me diner, has a reputation for being a "tough girl" because she exudes attitude and wears steel-toed boots. She's only been in Lucky Harbor for about six months and the residents don't know how really tough her life was before she came to town as Amy keeps everyone at a distance. That includes Matt Bowers, the local forest ranger, who exudes sexiness, has his own past he'd like to leave behind and seems to have his eyes firmly fixed on Amy. She notices and they've been doing a quiet dance around this odd attraction for awhile.

Amy is a tough girl, no question about it, having been on her own since she was sixteen and her life wasn't a picnic before she left home. She now has two very good friends in Mallory Quinn and Grace Brooks and they're focused on getting her to be "The Good Girl" for a change. Everyone in town seems to know that she and Matt have some sort of "thing" and her friends are determined to find the opening to shove her through to get something going.

Matt and Amy go from almost 0 to sixty overnight but that's consistent with who she is, someone looking to just have a sexual fling and no strings attached. That seems fine to Matt but these two have an unusual attraction that eventually breaks down all of those barriers they've erected. Amy uses her deceased grandmother's journal to help her find the peace, hope and heart she needs to achieve fulfillment. And, she befriends a young runaway who helps her to clearly see and forgive herself. Matt benefits from her transformation, too, as he sees an opportunity for a second chance in this relationship.

It's not easy to connect with Amy but her inner dialogue exposes her vulnerability, making her more appealing. That tough exterior is a ruse for a resilient young woman who wants to make a change in her life. Matt is just plain scrumptious and never really gives up on Amy or the potential of their relationship. Even though some of her forest adventures didn't keep my attention, Amy's change because of them made it worthwhile.

I liked the story, Amy and Matt's romance and the craziness of the quirky people of Lucky Harbor. I'm looking forward to the final story of the Chocoholics (Grace's story).

CR Review: Lucky in Love by Jill Shalvis

Lucky in Love (Lucky Harbor, #4)

Lucky in Love
by Jill Shalvis
Book #4 in the Lucky Harbor Series
Contemporary Romance
★★★

Mallory Quinn has had enough of playing it safe. As a nurse and devoted daughter, she takes care of everyone but herself. And as the local good girl, she's expected to date Mr. Right. But for once, she'd like to take a risk on Mr. Wrong. And who could be more wrong than Ty Garrison? The mysterious new guy in town has made it clear that he's only passing through, which suits Mallory just fine. Besides, his lean, hard body and sexy smile will give her plenty to remember once he's gone . . .
For the first time in his life, Ty can't bear to leave. Helping this sexy seductress-in-training walk on the wild side is making him desire things he shouldn't including leaving the military for good. As their just-for-fun fling becomes something more, Mallory and Ty wonder if they could really be this lucky in love. After all . . . anything can happen in a town called Lucky Harbor.

REVIEW:

Mallory Quinn has always been known as "the good girl" by her family and the residents of Lucky Harbor. She's an ER nurse, taking care of not only her patients but everyone around her. There's a new man in town that they all refer to as Mysterious Cute Guy and when Ty Garrison happens to cross paths with Mallory, he ends up on her Mr. Wrong list. It just so happens that Mallory decides it's time to stop playing it safe and explore her wild side and Ty's just the one for her supposed one-time experiment.

The first books in this series focused on the romances of the Traeger sisters. These next three involve three friends who call themselves the Chocoholics. Mallory's is the first story and it's so much fun. She really doesn't know how to explore her wild side but she puts everything into it. She has a steamy, impromptu encounter with Ty that she thinks is going to be a one-time affair. However, both of them find they just can't seem to stay away from each other, every subsequent encounter intended to be the last.

You cannot help but adore Mallory. Yes, she's nice and everyone's go-to girl but she truly has a good heart and a wicked sense of humor. Ty is really a mysterious guy but only because he chooses to be. He's got a troubled past stemming from his career as a Navy SEAL and then a paid security consultant. He's in Lucky Harbor to recuperate from an injury and has no plans to establish roots there. Ty's gorgeous and can have his pick of eligible women but he's drawn to Mallory because he knows her heart.

Both Ty and Mallory have to come to terms with their own truths, that their relationship isn't a fling and they've come to mean much more to each other. But it's their journey to get to this realization that's the appeal of this story. Combined with Mallory's friends, Amy and Grace, and the quirky folks of Lucky Harbor, the secondary characters provide lots of laughs and support to a well written story and a really good romance.

This series is two separate trilogies in one. You don't need to read the first three to enjoy this book. While there are a few characters from the earlier books that appear here, their backgrounds are sufficiently explained for appropriate context. This is the first book in the beginning of the second trilogy and it's a winner.

Terrified, fascinated, I discover I possess a power I can’t control: my wishes come true. After an all-too-real attack by the animal from my dreams, I wake to find myself the captive of the seductive and ruthless fae lord Rogue. In return for my rescue, he demands an extravagant price—my firstborn child, which he intends to sire himself…

With no hope of escaping this world, I must learn to harness my magic and build a new life despite the perils—including my own inexplicable and debilitating desire for Rogue. I swear I will never submit to his demands, no matter what erotic torment he subjects me to…

About the Author:

Jeffe Kennedy took the crooked road to writing, stopping off at neurobiology, religious studies and environmental consulting before her creative writing began appearing in places like Redbook, Puerto del Sol, Wyoming Wildlife, Under the Sun and Aeon. An erotic novella, Petals and Thorns, came out under her pen name of Jennifer Paris in 2010, heralding yet another branch of her path, into erotica and romantic fantasy fiction. Since then, an erotic short, Feeding the Vampire, and another erotic novella, Sapphire, have hit the shelves.

Her contemporary fantasy novel, Rogue’s Pawn, book one in A Covenant of Thorns, will be published in July, 2012. Rogue's Pawn Excerpt

“Enough,” a male voice said.

As if I’d ceased to exist, Tinker Bell blinked her eyes and regained her lovely self, face smoothing, shining once again in sunny elegance. Reboot and resume program. She gracefully stood and glided to the tray, set the bowl precisely in the center, lifted the tray and left the room without hesitation.

Booted footsteps crossed the room toward me. Act II, scene ii. Exit Nasty Tinker Bell, Enter God-Only-Knows-What-Now. My face was sticky with whatever the brothy stuff had been, my hair wet and fouled. I stank. I hurt. I was chained to a bed in a place so completely unknown I couldn’t begin to understand it. I tried to squeeze my legs closer together, but the chains seemed at the limit of their reach. The energy of my brief triumph evaporated, allowing tears to well up again.

Oh, please, please, please, do not cry. The threatening sting worsened. I closed my eyes and one tear leaked out. He stopped next to me, surveying me.

“You’re certainly a mess.” His wry voice was rich and smooth.

My eyes snapped open to glare at him through the blur. Fifty different smart remarks flew across my tongue, most along the lines that any failures of appearance on my part could be laid on the doorstep of someone besides myself. But even the buzz of the first word on my vocal chords brought searing agony. Relieved to have a legitimate reason for the tears, I almost welcomed the searing sensation.

“No, don’t try to talk—no one needs to hear what you have to say, anyway. Not that we can help it, since you think so loudly. And you have a decision to make. We have a quandary.” He began pacing, boots echoing against stone. “No one can heal you while you’re bound in silver and we can’t release you from the silver until you have yourself under control. Which will take a considerably long time—perhaps years of training—if you’re even able to accomplish it at all.”

I thought of the birds crashing in increasing cacophony with a small shudder.

“Exactly,” he confirmed. “And yes,” he said from the window behind my head where he seemed to be gazing out, “I can hear most of your thoughts—another reason to save trying to speak aloud.”

My stomach congealed in panic. Had he heard my secret thoughts? Don’t think of them, bury them deep, deep. Think of other things…like what? Think of home, think of Isabel. Isabel, my cat—Clive hated her. What would happen to her now? How could I not have thought of her until this moment? Abandoned, wondering why I never came home for her… And my mother—she’d be frantic. How long had I been gone? They could be all dead and buried, lost to me forever. The anguish racked me.

“Shh.” The man sat on the side of my bed now, heavier than Nasty Tinker Bell. He brushed the hair back from my forehead, then placed his long fingers over my brow and, with his thumbs, rhythmically smoothed along my cheekbones, wiping away the tears that now flowed freely.

I stifled a sob. I had cried more in the past day than I had in years. The sweeping along my cheekbones soothed me, melting warmth through my skull. The rhythm became part of my breathing. Deep breaths. Smooth, easy. The awful tightness in my chest gave a little sigh and released.

“Let’s try again, shall we?” The man pulled his hands away. I could hear him brush them against his thighs. Soup, tears and blood. Yuck.

My eyes cleared enough for me to see him. Ebony-blue climbed over half his face. The winding pattern of angular spirals and toothy spikes swirled out of his black hair on the left side of his face, placing sharp fingers along his cheekbone, jaw and brow. For a moment, the tattoo-like pattern dominated everything about him. Ferocious and alien.

Once I adjusted, I could see past the lines. His face echoed Tinker Bell’s golden coloring. He could be her fraternal twin, with those same arched cheekbones. But where she was golden dawn, he was darkest night. Midnight-blue eyes, that deep blue just before all light was gone from the sky, when the stars have emerged, but you could see the black shadows of trees against the night. He shared Tinker Bell’s rose-petal mouth, but with a curious edge to it. I suppose a man’s mouth shouldn’t remind one of a flower, and there was nothing feminine about this man. Where she wore the pink sugar roses of debutantes and bridal showers, his lips made me think of the blooms of late summer, the sharp-ruffled dianthus, edges darkening to blood in the heat. His bone structure was broader than hers but still seemed somehow differently proportioned, his arms hanging a bit too long from shoulders not quite balanced to his height. Inky hair pulled back from his face fell in a tail down his back. One strand had escaped to fall over his shoulder and I could see a blue shimmer in its silk sheen.

He arched his left eyebrow, blueness in the elegant arch, repeating the deep shades of the fanged lines around it.

“Shall we?” he repeated.

I stared at him. What was the question?

HR Review: Texas Glory by Lorraine Heath

Texas Glory (Texas Trilogy, #2)
Texas Glory
by Lorraine Heath
Book #2 in the Texas Trilogy
Historical Romance/Western Romance
Amazon | B&N
RATING: ★★★★

Cordelia McQueen was a virtual prisoner in her father's house. Until everything changed when she was shamelessly traded in a battle for land and water rights, and thrust into an unfamiliar world as the bride of Dallas Leigh.

Dallas had given his life to the land. Now he aimed to put West Texas on the map. But as he gazed into the eyes of the lovely stranger who belonged to him, he caught a glimpse of another ambition--a warm, radiant desire of the heart. Was this the woman who would walk beside him as, together, they carved out a rich future with all the promise of love?

REVIEW:

Dallas Leigh's biggest dream was to have a son to share what he'd created. The problem was not being able to find a woman in his region of Texas. His last attempt to transport one from another state ended as a failure when she fell in love with his brother, Houston. When he discovered Cordelia “Dee” McQueen's existence, he secured a deal with her miserable brothers and father in exchange for her becoming his wife.

This story of a marriage of convenience was brutally honest and sincere. Heath does an admirable job of creating empathy for both people in this marriage as they struggle to understand one another and find a way to a relationship. There are hardships and successes along the way that seem to be in keeping with the era. I loved the story and rooted for Dee and Dallas. You cannot help but have empathy for Dee when you learn more about her family and how she was treated. You can just imagine as she was traded to Dallas for land and water rights. And, Dallas becomes more likable as he makes personal adjustments to accommodate a wife.

I loved the characters from the first book in the series and they play a large role in this story, too. We get an opportunity to find out how Houston and Amelia’s lives are progressing as Dallas and Dee try to make their marriage work.

This is a book you'll definitely want on your shelf. And, Heath really seems to capture the hardships and realities of living in the western frontier during that era. You’ll want to jump right into the final book in this trilogy.

Guest Post + Giveaway with Ana Hart

5 Lines From Classic Literature
My Character Could Do Better
by Ana Hart

(Writing as Daniel Webb, the main character from Ana's One Powerful Addiction series)

Warning: This post is rated M for being mother-fracking awesome.

Hey, guys. I'm Daniel Webb and, uh, yeah, Ana said I had to do a guest post because, you know, that's what we do. We do guest posts. But she decided to cop out and make me do this one so here we are. So I decided to butcher some lines from classical literature because, hey, it was my day off from work today and it's not like I had anything better to do.

Except, you know, hang out with my buddy, James, or have sexy, naked time with my girlfriend, Alyssa. But, no, not me! On my day off, I get to write guest posts! Thanks, Ana. You're awesome. In a total controlling, bitchy slave driver kind of way.

(That's going to come back to bite me in the ass later, isn't it?)

Oh, yeah, and we're doing a giveaway, so leave a comment below with your email address for your chance to win some free shit. Good luck, have fun, and enjoy.

Clarissa, or The History of a Young Lady
by Samuel Richardson

Clarissa, or the History of a Young Lady

The line: “By my soul, I can neither eat, drink, nor sleep; nor, what's still worse, love any woman in the world but her.”

Rewritten: “Dude, I need a hobby.”

Cyrano de Bergerac
by Edmond Rostand

Cyrano De Bergerac

The line: "She is a mortal danger to all men. She is beautiful without knowing it, and possesses charms that she's not even aware of. She is like a trap set by nature - a sweet perfumed rose in whose petals Cupid lurks in ambush! Anyone who has seen her smile has known perfection. She instills grace in every common thing and divinity in every careless gesture. Venus in her shell was never so lovely, and Diana in the forest never so graceful as my Lady when she strides through Paris!"

Rewritten: “That chick's a maneater!”

Dangerous Liaisons
by Choderlos de Laclos

Dangerous Liaisons

The line: "Now, I'm not going to deny that I was aware of your beauty. But the point is, this has nothing to do with your beauty. As I got to know you, I began to realise that beauty was the least of your qualities. I became fascinated by your goodness. I was drawn in by it. I didn't understand what was happening to me. And it was only when I began to feel actual, physical pain every time you left the room that it finally dawned on me: I was in love, for the first time in my life. I knew it was hopeless, but that didn't matter to me. And it's not that I want to have you. All I want is to deserve you. Tell me what to do. Show me how to behave. I'll do anything you say."

Rewritten: “You're pretty. I love you. Uh... now boss me around.”

The Portrait of a Lady
by Henry James

The Portrait of a Lady

The line: “It has made me better loving you ... it has made me wiser, and easier, and brighter. I used to want a great many things before, and to be angry that I did not have them. Theoretically, I was satisfied. I flattered myself that I had limited my wants. But I was subject to irritation; I used to have morbid sterile hateful fits of hunger, of desire. Now I really am satisfied, because I can’t think of anything better.”

Rewritten: “I used to be a pompous prick before you came along. Now I'm just pompous.”

In An Artist's Studio
by Christina Rossetti

The Complete Poems

The line: "He feeds upon her face by day and night, And she with true kind eyes looks back on him, Fair as the moon and joyful as the light."

Rewritten: “Holy shit, he's a zombie!”
